Project Description
This mosque is located within the site of The University of Karachi, one of the oldest universities in the city sprawling over twelve hundred acres.
The design is kept purposefully simple; an uncluttered, column free space with a large central dome symbolizing unity and oneness. The deliberate use of white in the prayer mat sized marble on the floor, the walls and the ceiling amplifies the desire for natural light which floods the interior of the space. The system of windows along the elevations create shadows based on the time of day referencing prayer times offering opportunity to reflect and contemplate.
The minarets are designed to elongate the structure, dematerializing as they rise, forming points of light in the night sky. The dome is animated with operable windows keeping the space cool at the lower level. A women’s prayer area was added as a loft to the old building creating a balcony-like extension to this mosque.
